Welcome! We're so glad you're interested in Church of the Advent. Coming to a church for the first time can be daunting, so we've answered a few questions below in hopes that you feel more at ease. If you have further questions, please feel free to email admin@adventdc.org.

What if I don't know anybody?

Advent welcomes several newcomers each week. There are greeters to welcome you at the door as well as a welcome table with people who can answer any questions you might have. Though we will do everything we can to make you feel at home, we also encourage you to introduce yourself to others. After all, the person next to you may be there for the first time as well!

What should I expect?

While our service is rooted in ancient Christian liturgy, we believe that liturgy should be as accessible as it is transcendent. Whether you are new to church or a longtime Christian, you’ll find others just like you engaging in a form of worship that is participatory, joyful, and reverent.

In our service, we sing both classic and contemporary hymns accompanied by different musicians who are part of our community. We pray for our city, our church, and the world. We read portions of Scripture and hear a sermon that relates God’s Word to our life. And each week our service culminates in the Eucharist, a celebratory feast open to all baptized Christians to celebrate our communion with God and one another. Learn more about Sunday Worship here.

What about my children?

During our Sunday services, we offer care for infants and toddlers, as well as children’s worship for children ages 10 and under. Our childcare workers provide a safe and nurturing environment for our children to play, sing, and have a Bible lesson before rejoining the service during the passing of the peace, right before the Eucharist. Your children are also welcome to stay with you for the entire service if you would prefer. Learn more about our children's worship program here.

Get to Know Us

We believe that the life of the church extends beyond four walls on Sunday nights and out into our daily lives. We'd encourage you to explore a few of the other ways that we live life together throughout the week.

  • You can register for Advent Commons, which is the digital hub of life together—it's where we post all our events, church-wide messages, and more.

  • Visit a Core Group to see our community spread across several neighborhoods in different homes nearly every night of the week.

  • Join us for a newcomers' dinner. Other newcomers gather for a meal at our pastor's house and to hear more about the story of Advent. These dinners take place quarterly and are advertised through Advent Commons.

  • Register for Advent Foundations. Foundations serves as our primary membership and discipleship class, where we explore three crucial questions for every Christian: What do we believe? How do I pray? How do I live? Foundations is open to anyone desiring to grow in their faith, even if they do not necessarily intend to become members of Church of the Advent. It is, however, a prerequisite for membership within Church of the Advent.

Advent is part of the Diocese of Christ Our Hope in the Anglican Church of North America (ACNA.) As a member of the ACNA, Advent ascribes to the Thirty-Nine Articles of religion and the Jerusalem Declaration. You can read more about what we believe, and what it means to be Anglican, here.
