CHILDREN ARE A VITAL PART OF CHURCH OF THE ADVENT.

We believe they are full worshiping members of the family of God who bring their own unique gifts into God's Kingdom. Jesus told the grown-ups around him that they could not come to God unless they learned to be like the children in their midst. Kids represent a large part of our church family, and each week we pray together that God would grant us all courage, patience, and wisdom as we bring them up in the faith. Every time we baptize a child, we vow as a community to support them in their journey of knowing and loving God. Whether this is your kids’ first week attending or whether they worship at Advent regularly, we hope they will experience God’s love richly in our midst.

Our Programs

Advent’s Children’s & Youth Ministries include four main components:

  • During the Sunday school hour, we offer childcare for children 6 months-3rd grade, and Sunday school for students in 4th-12th grades.

  • During the worship service we offer nursery and toddler classes as well as Children’s Worship for PreK-3rd Grade.

  • Youth Confirmation (8th-12th grades) meets monthly after church for lunch and a time of teaching, discussion, and prayer. Youth mentors and parents attend monthly meetings with confirmands, who are confirmed in May.

  • Middle school and high school youth groups meet Sunday evenings for dinner and a discipleship talk or discussion, as well as occasional social events throughout the year.

Family Ministries also aims to equip parents by periodically hosting gatherings to discuss timely topics related to parenting and spiritual formation, and by providing resources for at-home discipleship.

I’m new

Welcome! We’re so glad to have you. Visitors are always welcome at Church of the Advent, and we love meeting new kids and their parents in our Children’s & Youth Ministry. Kids are welcome to join us for any of our programming. If you plan to attend regularly, we ask parents to register their children using the registration form below.

Sunday School meets every week for 4th-7th graders and every other week for 8th-12th graders. To find out the Sunday school schedule, simply contact hmorton@adventdc.org.

We send out a weekly email on Saturday mornings to volunteers and parents including details for Sunday worship plus upcoming events and resources for families. We also communicate via groups on Planning Center for each of our classrooms as well as an Advent Parents group. To be added to any of these groups, contact familyministries@adventdc.org.

Health & Safety

It is our desire to provide a healthy and safe environment for all of the children at Church of the Advent. Our Child Protection Policy includes full details on all of our guidelines and safeguards for keeping children safe in our care. You can access this document here.

HOW CAN I SERVE IN CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES?

Volunteers are vital for creating a loving, Spirit-led, worshipful experience for our children! We invite anyone who has attended Advent for at least 6 months to apply to volunteer in Children’s Ministry. Volunteers serve about once per month on Sundays and commit for the academic year (September - May). Advent parents are expected to volunteer in Children’s Ministry to support the ministry and help them know what their kids are experiencing.

We’d love to talk to you about volunteering! The first step is completing the volunteer application. If you have specific questions about volunteering, please contact kanderson@adventdc.org
